Even though you probably picture most canines with any clothes beyond their natural fur coat, dressing up these precious animals actually goes way back!

Dogs In Prehistory

You might imagine a lot of mangy dogs around a prehistoric camp fire. But as humans survived cold climates, and began to clothe themselves in the fur of other animals, it is not impossible to believe that they shared their furs and blankets with their four legged friends. I am, of course, not aware of any proof for this theory. It is not well documented, and that is why we call it prehistory.

Some ancient Egyptian art pictures figures with clothed human bodies and dog heads. It is not hard to imagine that real dogs were dressed up in clothing back in the day.

Military And Service Use Of Dog Clothing

The military use of dogs probably dates back as far as our friendship with dogs. There is documentation that ancient warriors used dogs, and so also dressed them up in protective clothing. A well trained canine companion was valuable, and they were protected.

Similar to military use, dogs were also used to help humans with law enforcement and resuce operations. Any clothes on dogs either protected them or marked them as a particular sort of service animal.

This practice certainly continues well into modern times.

Today’s Clothes For Dogs

Today, we use dog clothing to protect, mark, and decorate our beloved pooches. In case you have not seen examples of this, you may be interested in our dog snuggie video. If you decide to clothe your dog, you will not be the first person in history to do it!

Here is are some complaints that many pet owners have about commercially purchased dog snuggies. Maybe one of these issues has stopped you from purcasing one of these cozy and convenient dog outerwear products for yourself.

There are no snuggies for big dogs. The largest size you can buy on the market is only made for dogs that weight less than 30 pounds. That leaves many larger dogs out in the cold!

DIY Dog Snuggies

A few enterprising individuals have created their own patterns. These patterns may have been created from the basic sizes, but now you can enlarge them to fit a larger animal! Even if you can purchase one that already would fit your dog, this gives you the ability to pick your own colors and prints. You can buy the fabric, and other supplies, in any craft, hobby, or sewing store.

There is one more reason you want to make your own snuggies. You may not like ordering things online or over the phone. Since these are “as seen on TV” dog snuggie products, you may not have the option to purchase one in your local pet store. When you make your own, you can avoid all of those concerns!

You can certainly produce these a lot more cheaply that buying them too. When you consider the price and the shipping charges, purchased out wear can get pretty expensive. When you can start making them yourself, you could create a couple for your own pups. You could also make them as gifts for some other pet owners you know and love.

Why Make Dog Snuggies?

You can create a perfect fit for your own dog.

They are really rather simple to make.

You can save money by doing it yourself.

You could create the perfect, affordable gift for lots of other dog lovers!

A Dog Costume May Help Your Dog Fight Crime!

During most of history, and prehistory too, dogs seemed to do fine without wearing any clothes. Canines of all types relied upon their natural fur coat to keep them warm and cozy. If dogs have fur coat, why would they need to wear a coat?

This fur also provided plenty of decoration so they could be beautiful in their natural form. Things are changing though. Many people like to buy outfits for their canine friends today.

Is Your Dog Cozy?

There are many different reasons that people buy clothes for dogs today. Dogs might have been bread to survive in a very different climate than the one you keep them in these days.

If you live in a cold climate, and you have a dog with a bushy, fur coat, you may not need to buy a dog snuggie or sweater. But if you live in a cold climate, and have purchased a hairless dog, you may realize that your pet is uncomfortable when they have to go outside to do their business.

If it is very cold where you live, some dogs that have fur, may still need some extra protection from the elements.

So one reason that people outfit their pets is to keep them warm and comfortable. You can find different outer wear that can be worn inside or outside. With a good selection of styles and sizes, you should be able to find the right garment to keep your precious friend quite cozy!

You can find a good selection of different types of blankets and sweaters for this. You may be able to buy the right thing at a large pet store or online pet shop. I have even sold unique, costume pet garments sold at craft fairs!

Is Your Dog Any Fun?

Other folks just like to dress up their dogs because they want to celebrate a holiday, draw attention to their pet, or mark a special event.

You can find an assortment of Halloween dog costumes. When you go out to tirck or treat, you may want to take your dog for a walk too. In that case, you may want to outfit Fido or Fluffy with an outfit that matches yours! You can also find dog costumes for other holidays. Go ahead and turn your special friend into an elf, turkey, or valentine.

This can all be in good fun. Most dogs enjoy attention. A cute and comfortable dog costume can be a way for your pet to generate more attention from other people. If your pet does not mind wearing the costume, it cannot do any harm.

You need to shop with care. Think about these things as you shop for your dog. Make sure the outfit is fairly easy to clean because most dogs like to get dirty once in awhile. Make sure the clothing will be comfortable so your pet will enjoy wearing his new outfit. You should also find clothing that is easy to put on and take off. You do not want to wrestle with your dog every time you have to dress or undress him!

Pet outfits can be fun. Protective garments may keep your pet healthier in some situations.

Dog Sweaters

Of course, we are big fans of Dog Snuggies. But there are a couple of problems with those new products. Many people still turn to dog sweaters in order to clothe their pets.

The big flaw with the snuggies is that they only seem to come in sizes that wit fit very small to moderately sized canines.

Why Get Your Dog A Sweater At All?

You may figure that only people need sweaters. After all, we are mostly hairless. Some breeds of dogs have a nice thick coat of hair, especially in the winter, and they are very well protected for cold weather. This seems fairly reasonable, but you have to consider a couple of things.

Some breeds of dogs are pretty hairless. They were bred in warmer climates, and they will get too cold if exposed to chilly weather.

Even hardy, cold weather breeds, may not be able to withstand freezing temperatures for long periods of time.

Where Can You Buy Dog Snuggies?

You can find dog sweaters all over the place. I have seen them sold at large pet stores, craft markets, and pet fairs. You can even purchase them online from some of the larger or more specialized online pet retailers.

If you are the handy type, you could even knit or crochet a sweater for your beloved best friend. There are some online craft shops that may even have hand crafted and unique designs.

Maybe making a snuggy type article, for larger dogs, is a good niche for a handy craftsperson. Maybe the company is just testing their product with little to medium sized dogs. I am not sure. Does anybody have an answer to this question?
